The eight components to this concept include health education, physical education, health services, nutrition services, counseling, psychological and social services, health school environment, health promotion for staff, family/community involvement.

School is a place that all must pass through - impact on the health of children, families, and community

CSHP improves the access to health services, educate about pressing health issues, and provide a safe and healthy environment

Foundations for a CSHP are:
1. supportive school administration
2. well-organized school health council
3. written school health policies

Issues that face school health advocates:
1. lack of support for coordinated school health
2. Controversal topics
3. Implementation of school-based health centers
4. violence in school

All in all, this chapter discussed the importance of a CSHP and the benefits that the students will encounter.

We have gotten along in schools so far without coordinated school health, why do we need it now? Time is at a premium - let the parents be responsible for their kids health.

Group response:
My team and I feel that we need a coordinated school health program more then ever now because of the many different health issues youth are encountering. Many of these issues, obesity, substance abuse, can be totally avoidable and preventable. The reason for their occurence is the lack of information people have about their health and what substances and nutrition can do to your good for the better or worse.
We also felt that teaching health should not be left up to the parents because many parents are unaware of this knowledge too. We think parents and teachers need to do both their parts. Teachers provide the information and the parents make sure that the child is taking part in the healthy decisions being taught at school. No matter what, you can’t leave it up to one or the other on their own, it’s a team project.

Chapter 1

"A" Team

Health – A dynamic state or condition of the human organism that is multidimensional in nature, a resource for living, and results from a persons interactions with and adaptations to his or her environment; therefore, it can exist in varying degrees and is specific to each individual and his or her situation.

Community – A group of people who have common characteristics; communities can be defined by location, race, ethnicity, age occupations, interest in particular problems or outcomes, or other common bonds.

Public Health – Things that society does collectively to assure the conditions in which people can be healthy.

Public Health System – The organizations mechanism of those activities undertaken within the formal structure of government and the associated efforts of private and voluntary organizations and individuals

Community Health – The health status of a defined group of people and the actions and conditions to promote, protect and preserve there health

Population Health – The health status of people who are not organized and have no identity as a group or locality and the actions and conditions to promote, protect, and preserve there health

5 Major Determinants of Health:
1. The best tips I learned from this class include using short, positive rules, and allowing your students to help determine the rules in the class. I believe the reason for this was due to my lack of knowledge for effective technologies. For example, iPods and other mp3 players can be very effective for learning. Podcasts, digital storytelling, and ebooks are some of the things that can be used also. Many of these technologies can be used to differentiate your classroom and reach student’s multiple intelligences. Again, the group activity allowed me to understand these technologies, and the presentations were very informative. For the items I already knew about, iPods and Photoshop, I didn’t know what you could do with them in an actual lesson. The other technologies I had never heard about before.

Why might it be important for students to learn with technology?

The reason it is so important for students to learn with technology is due to what the future holds. There aren’t many jobs currently that do not use some sort of technology. The older generations have to be highly trained to use this equipment and technology. The students being taught right now and from now on will learn with technology because that is what makes up the world, and they won’t need the training when they are out looking for jobs because of their previous knowledge. Cell phones, laptops, and iPods are part of student’s daily lives and these are just a few examples of the most common sources of technology used. Ultimately, teaching with technology enhances learning and gives students a tool they will use for the rest of their lives. Before this class, I already knew how important technology was for students, but the group projects we did deepened my awareness for this subject. I didn’t know you could use so many sources of technology in a classroom. I would like to see more specific examples of ways to bring these different technologies into the classroom.

How to help someone use a computer

One thing I think is important to tell yourself is that, "You've forgotten what it's like to be a beginner." The reason this is so important to remember is that you were once in those shoes. You started the process out knowing nothing, and you have to be aware that you have come a long way to get the knowledge you have today. This means that the person you are teaching is a clean slate, and they don't know what you do. They will need the same time you did to learn the material.

An important rule to keep in mind is explaining your thinking. This is just thinking out loud. When you open up a file, tell your learners, "I am going to open up My Documents folder and within this I will find my folder named Stephanie." This is very helpful to the learner because they will be able to see and hear what is happening.

Reading this article made me realize that when we do our team presentation, we need start out very basic, because we have to assume all of our learners are just beginning with this source of technology.

Agre, Phil (1996). The feedback from the students in the book was also nice to read.

From the thoughts of my mentor teacher: “You can’t learn from right answers, you can only learn from wrong ones!” I like this philosophy, because it just makes so much sense. When a wrong answer is given in class, the teacher then has an opportunity to educate the student. This is the reason why teachers become teachers.

Fires in the Bathroom: Chapter 3

In this chapter on classroom behavior, I like the idea that Porsche comes up with. She said that if a student likes to pass notes in class then have them take notes on the board for the class information.

As a teacher, if you can bring strengths of students into the classroom then you are doing well. This has a direct tie with Porsche’s idea. For instance, when you are having trouble with the student in the second row that is speaking out of turn and not raising his hand to give his answers, then you could make him go to the front of the class at the end of the period and do a small presentation to recap what was said in class. This will give this student a chance to be in center attention as well as allowing the others to learn from this.

Fires in the Bathroom QR

Introduction:
1. The biggest item in the reading that jumped out at me the most would have to be the "Wanted" ad on the first page. Here is the ideal teacher description made up by the students.

2. This portion of the readings stuck out because, ultimately, this is what I want to become, the ideal teacher. There are so many little things in this description that teachers can just forget to do. For example, one thing listed is that the teacher must smile. This is so important and can make such a difference in a person's day. The job description is a reminder for me because it lists all the things I wanted in a teacher as well.

Chapter 1:
1. The section that explains what teachers should know about their student's grabbed my attention, because I totally agree that a teacher should be aware that their student plays the guitar and so on.

2. I feel it is important to know what your students are interested in not only to get to know them, but it will also help you out as a teacher. You will be able to think of different activities that would involve the interests of the students. This is related to the Multiple Intelligence theory.

Chapter 2:
1. There is a respect list in chapter 2. This list states different things teachers and students have to do in order to receive respect. This is a somewhat nontraditional list.

2. The respect list has many things you would not expect to see written. For example, "don't assume you know everything about everyone" is one of the items on the list. This seems like something you should know already without reminders. Respect is crucial in the classroom and can be a very sensitive issue. This is why the respect list is so important.

Copyright and Fair Use LR

14. In question 14, Disney movies were shown to a group of small children during back-to-school night. The showing of this movie is against the Fair Use policy which in my opinion is ridiculous. What makes this even worse is that Disney offers a one-time use license for $25. You have got to be kidding me! These movies were paid for and should be able to be used in groups. So is it against the law for me to have friends over and watch movies? This is getting out of hand. I just don't understand how this is wrong. Is it just Disney? Actually, now that I think about it, is it against policy because the kids are at day care? The child is paying to be at the child care and therefore paying to see this movie? If that is the case, I can see why it is breaking the Fair Use code.

Copyright and Fair Use SR

Short Responses
1. In regards to the question of the teacher making copies of all her CD-ROM discs, I felt that this question of fairness was false, because it was an infringement of copyright laws. You aren't supposed to burn DVD's or VHS's, or so I thought, and I figured it was the same with a CD-ROM. Now I know that under these circumstances, it is allowed.

5. For this question the geography teacher was in the wrong for burning more software to provide to every student, but the teacher who made extra copies for backup wasn't doing anything wrong. I don't know if I feel this is right. I agree that having backup is important, but I also believe that having the information available to every student at a time is equally important.

6. For question number 6, I was shocked to see the answer. You can keep pictures in a folder for a reference for your students with out giving the author/photographer credit but can't if you use the same picture/information on an overhead projection? This isn't clear to me.

8. When I first read number 8, I thought that nothing was wrong with the picture, but this was before I really read into the question. We credited the site which is good, but apparently he didn't have a legitimate reason.

11. I didn't know you could tape shows off of TV for your own personal use, but I guess if you weren't supposed to do that then why would they have made recorders?

12. Like in the above question, I didn't know taping of TV was allowed. But this seems like a complete double standard. You would think that if the student paid for the rental then she could copy it instead of having it taped off of TV for free.

13. This doesn't seem fair at all. How can a different class use work found on the Internet with out citing all of the appropriate information?

15. The teacher who uses the video clips should be okay if he properly cites where he got them. On the other hand if you go to the website given on the answer page, you don't have to worry about breaking the copyright codes? Again, this doesn't seem fair.
